Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB®

Welcome to one of the most intimidating trail festivals on the East Coast of America, recently brought under the UTMB World Series 🪨.

The Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB® takes place every September in the Shenandoah Valley, in Virginia, at the heart of a national forest that bears the slightly regal double-name of George Washington and Jefferson National Forest 🌲. It’s there, between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Alleghanies, four distances coexist in perfect harmony... Well, "harmony" might be a stretch when you're talking about that kind of elevation 😅. There’s the 21 km and 500 mD+, the 50 km and 1 550 mD+, the 100 km and 3 350 mD+, and finally the 100M : 167.4 km and 6 400 mD+ 🏔️. The big boss of the East Coast ! 💪

To give you a ballpark figure, it’s a bit like climbing Everest from Base Camp 🤯. Except in trail running, no helicopter refuels you ☕. The course starts at Camp Shenandoah ⛺️, a Scout camp founded in 1950, and winds through iconic peaks: Elliott Knob, Reddish Knob, Great North Mountain… All of it on a out-and-back route, which means at halfway, when you’re exhausted, you still have as much to go to go back 😳. That’s what makes the Grindstone utterly legendary in the American ultrarunning community, thanks to its well-established reputation as the toughest 100 miles east of the 100th meridian, a mythical line that splits the United States in two somewhere in the Great Plains. To the east of this line, the terrain is older, rounder, but don’t be fooled: the Appalachians have carved technical, winding, often humid trails, surrounded by dense vegetation that has a mind of its own 🤪. The runners of the 100M complete it in about 38 hoursand those who finish take away a belt buckle engraved— a sacred ultra tradition 🏅.

With its four distances, the Grindstone Running Festival truly embodies what Finishers is all about: the idea that adventure isn’t reserved for lifelong runners, and that every distance has its own nobility 🤴. You can start with the 21K and dream of the 100M in a few years 📆. The key is simply putting a foot on this trail, looking up at Virginia’s ridges, and understanding why thousands of runners cross the Atlantic each year to race here 🌍.

What’s fascinating about the Grindstone, is its recent transformation ☝️. Originally an underground favorite among insiders, it has joined the UTMB World Series ecosystem 🤩, giving it today a double-qualifier status: for UTMB Finals on one side, and for the Western States Endurance Run on the other, the world’s most legendary 100-mile race, with its annual lottery where thousands of runners hope to snag a bib 🎫. Finishing the Grindstone, thus opens two doors to the Ultra Grail 🚪. The extra magic is the timing 🍁. In September, the Shenandoah Valley enters the season when the deciduous forests turn red, orange and gold, turning every ridge into an impressionist painting 🖼️. The runners of the 100M cross at least one sunrise and one sunset in this setting, which reminds them, between cramps, why they signed up for this 🌅.

Because trail running is this: you don’t need to be the fastest, you just need to be there, feet in the Appalachian mud, watching the sun rise... and telling yourself you earned it 😍.
