In the heart of the Finnish taiga, NUTS Karhunkierros is an iconic trail and ultramarathon event in the north (Ruka-Kuusamo), weaving along the Bear Trail through Oulanka National Park. Choose from 160 km, 83 km, 34 km, or 13 km, and admire suspension bridges, wild forests, and rocky ridges under a sun that endures. After the effort, a sauna and local discoveries around Pieni Karhunkierros, Myllykoski, Konttainen, and Valtavaara.
Run to the heart of the Finnish taiga, wild and untamed! NUTS Karhunkierros is a trail and ultramarathon race emblematic of northern Finland (Ruka / Kuusamo region), following the famous Bear Trail through Oulanka National Park. Racers can choose between grueling ultramarathon distances (160 km and 83 km) as well as shorter routes (34 km and 13 km) 🏃🌲. The route delights with its suspension bridges over swift rivers, austere forests and rocky ridges, while the May-June sun shines nearly 24 hours a day.
After the race and the inevitable hot sauna session, the Ruka-Kuusamo region offers the quiet of the wild North: Tackle the loop Pieni Karhunkierros (Little Bear Trail) to see the historic Myllykoski mill and cross charming suspension bridges over the foaming river 🌉. With family, visit a reindeer farm (Porotila), where you can get up close to these remarkable animals and feed them reindeer lichen 🦌. Then hike up to the viewpoint Konttainen or the ridge of Valtavaara, from where a spectacular panorama opens onto an endless sea of green forests and lakes 🏔️.
To finish the day, savor a creamy, hearty salmon soup (Lohikeitto), a traditional slow-cooked reindeer stew (Poronkäristys) served with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, and, for dessert, taste the Arctic yellow-berry awash (Lakka) 🐟🫐
