The route winds through lush forests, landscapes around the fjord and the historic center of Aabenraa, then invites you to discover Slotsgade, Brundlund Slot, Sønderstrand and High Park. Take on the country’s most “mountainous” marathon without mountains! Aabenraa Bjergmarathon in southern Jutland is one of Denmark’s most demanding races 🏃. Even without Alpine peaks, the course packs steep, punishing climbs (led by the famous Kongevejen incline), capable of making you sweat buckets. Multiple distances are offered: full marathon (42 km), half marathon, 10 km, 5 km, as well as Nordic Walking walks, and the route winds through lush forests, panoramic fjord scenery, and the historic center of Aabenraa.
After conquering the steep climbs, Aabenraa invites you to unwind in the calm, Southern Jutland style:
Stroll through the historic street Slotsgade with its charming little colorful houses, and visit Brundlund Slot – a cosy castle set in moats that now houses an art museum 🏰. Then head to the sandy beach Sønderstrand right by the harbor, or get a height boost in the adventure park High Park Aabenraa 🌲. Visit the innovative science and technology park Universe Science Park on the nearby island of Als, or take a quick trip just beyond the nearby border to the charming German town of Flensburg 🚀.
To end the day, taste a local specialty: regional grilled sausages Ringriderpølse and salt-cured eggs (Solæg). For a sweet note, absolutely discover the tradition of the Sønderjysk Kaffebord, a bountiful spread of homemade cakes and biscuits 🍰.
