About this event

Between the lake's alligators and the treacherous rocks, ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Austin takes place at Pace Bend Park, on the shores of Lake Travis, in the heart of Texas Hill Country. In November, the event brings together three formats — Experience (9,895 m), Sprint (15,445 m) and World Series (25,095 m) — to close the American season in a wild and friendly vibe around Austin.

Between alligators lurking in the lake and rattlesnakes hiding under the rocks, swimrun here takes on a distinctly wild vibe 🐊. In November, Austin wraps up the ÖTILLÖ American season with an event tucked away in the Pace Bend Park, on the edge of the Travis Lake, in the Texas Hill Country 📍. The ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Austin offers three distances and thus closes the calendar, before the community packs away the suits for winter ☃️.

This race didn't always go by the name ÖTILLÖ. Originally named "America's Original SwimRun", it was the very first event of its kind organized in Texas, before joining the world circuit and its end-of-season calendar 🗓️. The DNA remains intact: the same terrain, the same pioneer's spirit, just under a new Swedish banner 🏃‍♀️. Camp Texlake, the site that now hosts start, finish and lodging, still bears traces of this founding history, to the point that some veterans of the course still refer to it by its former name, out of habit as well as nostalgia 🏕️.

Here, the course layout is unlike any other on the American circuit 🇺🇸. Swimmers move through the waters of the Colorado River in Texas, held here back by a dam that forms the Travis Lake, far from its namesake that crosses the Grand Canyon 🏜️. The land sections alternate singletracks through forest and rock formations along the shore, with sometimes a leap from a limestone cliff right into the water (an option for the bold, depending on the lake level) 🪨. Local wildlife is never far away either: does, raccoons and beavers add to the soundtrack along the course 🦌.

As presented, three formats make up the day. The "Experience" opens with 9 895 m, including 1 765 m of swimming and 8 130 m of running, designed as an accessible format for beginners staying close to shore 🤓. The "Sprint" climbs to 15 445 m: 3 215 m of swimming and 12 230 m of running for: already enough to test balance on rocky transitions ⛰️. The "World Series", a day-long reference, stretches to 25 095 m with 4 820 m of swimming and 20 275 m of running for 255 mD+, a profile fairly rolling compared to other US stops on the calendar. The real challenge here lies more in the heat than in elevation 🌡️.

The Texan climate has a reputation for good reason 🤠. A British competitor who had come to dispute a prior edition recalled facing 21°C and humidity of around 100% as they warmed up on Saturday, before a violent night storm sent temperatures tumbling to a much more breathable 12°C at race start ⛈️. This volatility is part of the local folklore: each edition brings its own weather surprise, between scorching heat and sudden coolness, with no one able to predict which scenario it will tilt into 😎.

The vibe, though, owes a lot to its status as the final straight 😮‍💨. Many competitors see it as the chance to close out their season with friends, before the winter break, in a far more relaxed atmosphere than the summer qualifications 🎉. Group lodging at Camp Texlake, with shared dorms and communal meals, extends this friendly dimension well beyond the finish line. Between race stories shared over a meal and reunions of the American swimrun community 🏊‍♀️.

The Texas Hill Country isn’t limited to the shores of Travis Lake 🪷. The region is brimming with canyons, caves and cliffs worth detouring for if you extend your stay. Hiking on rugged trails, rock climbing and mountain biking are booming there 🚵. Austin, an hour's drive away, completes the picture with its music scene and its Texas barbecue joints, a great way to refuel before clipping the finish line for good ✅.

A season's worth of action condensed into one day on the riverside of the Texas Colorado, that’s what awaits the last competitors of the year 🤠.
