Bukhara Night Race

If you’re reading this, the name "Boukhara" has piqued your curiosity 🤔. Nice catch! Gear up, it’s only getting started 😉.

Update your calendar, alarm, wake-up call… whatever you want! ⏰ In April, the streets of Boukhara will come alive in a way even the caravaneers of the Silk Road couldn’t have imagined 🐪. Thousands of runners with bibs will flood the cobbled lanes of one of Central Asia’s oldest cities 👵, beneath illuminated monuments 🏮. Off to Uzbekistan, where nights are wonderfully pleasant 🌙 with temperatures ranging from between 10 and 23°C. That’s to say running at night will be a blessing given daytime heat 🔥. We’re in the desert, after all! 🏜️ Well, not quite, because the city sits on a gigantic oasis in the heart of the Kyzylkum Desert 🌴.

The Bukhara Night Race offers four distances to leave no one on the roadside 🛣️: 21 km for the conquerors, 10 km for those who want to enjoy without too much suffering, 5 km for the curious and 2 km of Nordic walking for the wise who’ve understood that knees don’t grow on trees 🦵. The route starts from the Ark Citadel 🏰, this massive fortress whose earliest stones date back to the 5th century BCE 😮 and which housed the rulers of Boukhara until 1920. From there, the course winds through the illuminated lanes of the historical center, along the madrasas of the XVIIth century, skimming over the merchant domes and passing by the foot of the Kalon Minaret 🕌: A brickwork monument built in 1127 rising to 47 meters. Its fame even made Genghis Khan himself, upon entering the city 🌆, bow his head to gaze at it and legend says his hat fell, forcing him to stoop to pick it up before all his army 👑. The only involuntary bow of his career 😬. For the half marathon, the course has been designed to showcase as many monuments and illuminated streets as possible, 21 km across 25 centuries, a history/effort ratio that’s actually quite affordable 😎. At least you’re not getting duped!

And since the Uz(b)ek are known for having hearts on their sleeves 💖, they also plan kids’ races 🧒, so our little budding champions can soak up the event’s excitement too! 🌱 They’ll be able to cover 60 m, 300 m, 600 mor 1 km depending on age.

Boukhara, it’s over 2,500 years of history packed into 300 hectares of intact historic center 💫. Founded, according to legend, by a Persian prince named Siyavush, the city became in the 9th century the capital of the powerful Samanid empire and the world’s largest intellectual center of the Islamic world: its libraries drew scholars from across the East 📚. In short, if you had lived in the 10th century and wanted to be the smartest person in the room, you’d come to Boukhara 🤓. In 1220, Genghis Khan razed the city after a 15-day siege. The city survived, rebuilt, and today sits beside 140 monuments classified UNESCO. Marco Polo—he never managed to set foot there despite his legendary journeys, though he lauded it in his writings ✍️. You, though, can go. And even run there 🏃. Marco would have loved to have a bib 🙃.

When the clock stops ⏱️ and the breath returns (it always does, even if you’re not convinced at that moment 😮‍💨) Boukhara will keep giving 🤗. The Lyabi-Khauz basin ⛲️, heart of the old town ringed by century-old mulberries and tea terraces 🍵, is the perfect spot to recover while watching locals play cards as they’ve done for centuries 🃏. They haven’t run 21 km, and it shows 😩. For a bite 😋: the shashlik on hot coals 🍢, the plov Uzbek-style with lamb fat and chickpeas (the best glycogen recharge the world’s cuisine has ever produced, and no one can say otherwise 🍚), the samsa hot from the tandoor 🫓, and the Boukhara halva with sesame and honey 🍯, a specialty merchants used to transport on camelback for 5,000 km across the deserts 🌵.

The Silk Road passed by here, yours will pass by sweat 🥵. It’s less glamorous, but far more cardio 🫀. So grab your bib, Boukhara is waiting for you! 🫵
