After the effort, savor the local specialties and enjoy access to Verdun's high citadel, a powerful historical witness.
Trail running and History with a very big H is what the Tranchées Trail offers! In Verdun, a high place of the First World War, you’ll have the chance to explore breathtaking places. It’s an immersive multi-dimensional experience awaiting you at a site classified as “ Natura 2000 zone ” and “ Forest of Exception.” So head to the Meuse, in the Grand Est region. 😉
In March, as temperatures return to spring, the 4 distances await you for this atypical trail that will reveal the battlefields of Verdun, as well as the most iconic places of the WWI. The “ Baïonnette ” of 14 km and 270mD+, the Trench Circuit of 18 km and 390 m positive elevation, the “ Poilu ” of 32 km (710 mD+) and finally, the “ Vaillant ” of 55 km (1380 mD+). A walk of 15km is also offered For each event, you’ll start from Douaumont with the Poilus’ attention to order. The finish is timed at Pré l’Évêque, in the center of Verdun. 🏁
Overall, you’ll get to put your strengths to work on rolling and technical trails. As the quintessential nature run, the routes are mainly on paths and woodland trails where you’ll traverse the battlefields and glimpse the iconic WWI sites. The Forts of Douaumont, Vaux, and Souville, but also the fortified shelters, old batteries, the Froideterre ouvrage and the 4 chimneys, not forgetting unique access to the verdun’s citadel. A journey back in time, for a memory duty. 📜
For the post-race, your strolls are all set against this emotionally charged backdrop, a witness to a mythical battlelocal gastronomy, Meuse is renowned for its mirabelles so treat yourself to jam and eau-de-vie (as always in moderation!). You should also try Verdun’s famous dragées, it’s perfect to stave off hunger! 😋
So, have you made up your mind? 😁
