About this event
Between Basque tradition and festive ambiance, this ridge race takes place in Espelette and offers eight distances: 7 km (day or night) to the summit of Mondarrain, 14, 20 and 28 km, the 16.7 km Miam-Miam walk with a meal in a sheepfold, and the 14 km Nordic walking. Starts and finishes at Ezpeleta Castle, the mostly forested course offers mountain views and local entertainment all weekend.
No frills here, we love life and live it to the fullest! In a festive and traditional vibe, come take part in the Basque Peaks Run this mountain trail that has been around since 1977 (the same year as the birth of a certain Emmanuel Macron... 🧐).
Everything happens in the famous Espelette village, known for its peppers 🌶 that are dried against the façades of houses, in the heart of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The event takes place in mid-July, so don’t forget your water bottle because it will be seriously, seriously hot! 🥵
You’re bound to find a route at your feet because eight distances are on offer: the 7 km, one daytime and one night option, taking you to the Mondarrain summit ⛰ ; the 14, 20 and 28 km; the mid-meal walk of 16.7 km with a meal at a nearby shepherd’s hut (they know how to tempt you, those Basques, right?) and finally the Nordic walk of 14 km. 🏃♀️
Starts and finishes of the Peak Run are in the village center next to the Ezpeleta Castle with lots of people cheering you on, which always warms the heart! You’ll get to stroll through this traditional village with its pretty pedestrian streets filled with local artisans and its red and white traditional houses 🔴⚪️. A brass band of musicians will be there to accompany you as you leave the village and head onto the Basque trails (the majority of the race runs on forest paths, with a series of ascents and descents—hence the name of the race 🤓), all with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Back in the village, you’ll enjoy weekend-long Basque-themed activities and local specialties 😋. So sit back and enjoy Espelette pepper in all its forms! Basque chicken will brighten your plate, Bayonne ham will melt on your tongue, and the Basque cake will perfectly cap off your meal! 🤤
