In September, start from Orcines, in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, for the Volcan Race, with 13.5 or 25 km (and a Friendly Challenge option in three stages). Start from the panoramic train station of the Dômes, for a breathtaking view of the volcanoes of Auvergne and routes that mix forests and rocky trails. Three distances including a children's race, followed by a final descent toward the finish.
A department in central France, famous for its many volcanoes, its name drawn from one of them that’s sleeping, makes you wonder... ? Puy de Dôme, obviously. 🌋
Welcome to Orcines in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes for the Volcanoes Run. We’re counting on you to make an eruption happen right at the start. The trail takes place in September, so temperatures should be fairly mild for you to push yourself on 13.5 km and 25 km. And if you love sharing your effort, join the Friendly Challenge. The idea is simple: pick 2 of your loved ones (one adult and one child) and each team member must complete one of the three distances (yes, three since there’s also a kids’ race). At the end, your three times are added together to form a single time! Team spirit for the win 🙏!
The start of your race is in Orcines, at the train panoramique des Dômes station where you’ll have a breathtaking view of the Volcans d'Auvergne and the mountains ⛰️. The start is relatively gentle, with a short climb to warm up. Whatever race you choose, you’ll do a (small or big) tour of the Puy de Dôme. You’ll be able to look up to admire the Puy de Pariou and the high plateaus of Auvergne. Here the Puys are volcanoes; you won’t find water there (LOL). But don’t panic, they’re sleeping and aren’t likely to wake up anytime soon ... At least, normally 😂 . Let’s get back to the race. After a lovely climb through many pines, you’ll reach the Puy de Monchier and the Puy de Salomon, stunning summits. Your route will be mainly forested and with rocky trails. A final big climb will demand all your effort 🥵, then 2 km of descending to reach the finish.
You’re not done with volcanoes, even after your race! We invite you to head to Vulcania, regarded as Europe’s volcanic theme park just a stone’s throw from Clermont-Ferrand. By the way, the city’s culinary specialties are many: truffade, Ambert blue cheese, and potée auvergnate. Mmm, we promise you’ll be delighted! 👌
