Le marathon de Göteborg est l'une des courses de fond les plus anciennes de Suède. Il a été organisé pour la première fois en 1972 par le club d'athlétisme local Solvikingarna. Aujourd'hui troisième marathon du pays en termes d'importance, il attire chaque année en octobre des coureurs venus de toute la Suède et de l'étranger. La course commence et se termine dans l'arène historique de Slottsskogsvallen, située dans le parc verdoyant de Slottsskogen à Göteborg, un lieu classique qui accueille des compétitions d'athlétisme depuis le début du XXe siècle.
Le parcours suit un itinéraire aller-retour simple : les coureurs se dirigent vers le sud, depuis la ville vers la mer, les marathoniens effectuant deux tours et les semi-marathoniens un seul. Bien que le terrain soit relativement plat, les vents côtiers ajoutent souvent un élément difficile qui peut influencer le rythme et la stratégie.
