In Puurs-Sint-Amands, the Great Breweries Marathon offers five formats (marathon, 25 km and 17 km, the last two in walking mode) and an immersion in a Duvel Moortgat brewery. A day in early May blends malt, hops and sensations, on a rolling course with no traffic jams, in the heart of Flanders and the local heritage. More than 5,000 participants finish with a tasting and the famous tasting pack.
Let’s be honest: if James Bond had to swap his Martini 🍸 for a beer after a high-speed chase in the Antwerp Province, this is where he’d show up 🕵️.
The Great Breweries Marathon, it’s the Inception of running: an immersion in a brewery 🍻, inside another brewery, in the heart of the Flanders. Starting from Puurs-Sint-Amands, the event offers five formats : marathon, 25 km and 17 km, the last two doable on foot! 🚶 This early May day promises to be all about the malt 🌾 and sunshine 🌞. But no drinking on terraces: you’ll need to lace up your sneakers 👟 and rack up the kilometers before you can enjoy tasting once you’ve crossed the finish line! 🏁
The course is more rolling than a barrel rolling down a slope 🛢️, which is great for your joints 😏. We’ll leave the beaten paths to enter the holy of holies: you’ll tread the floors of the brewery Duvel Moortgat. For a little history, "Duvel" means "devil" in the local dialect 😈. People say a neighbor, impressed by the brew’s power, cried: It’s a real devil!". That’s exactly what your legs 🦵 will be thinking as you surge past the giant vats 😬. The vibe? A cheerful mix of a Stage of the Tour de France and a village festival that might have lasted a bit too long 🤪. With more than 5 000 participants, we’re far from the solitude of a distance runner. Here, we run for heritage, for the scent of hops that tickles the nose and for the aid stations that are anything but ordinary 😎. You won’t encounter bottlenecks on the course (except on bottle mouths 😝), but you might after the finish line when everyone jostles to grab their precious tasting pack 😋.
If you’re up for a longer game, swing by the Fort of Breendonk+". It’s steeped in history and puts your soreness in perspective 😅. To wow the crowd at your next dinner 🍽️, don’t forget to sample the Asperges de Malines. It’s local, in season, and a refreshing change from the usual pre-race pasta dish 🥗.
