Experience Alsace in Rouffach with the Trail of the Petit Ballon and the Circuit des Grands Crus, in the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons des Vosges. Four varied distances (8, 16, 28 and 54 km) start from Rouffach stadium, pass through vineyards and forests, and reach the Petit Ballon for a panorama over the Vosges. Final reward: a bottle of Crémant d’Alsace at the end of the effort.

More precisely in Rouffach, a small town in Haut-Rhin (Grand Est), not far from the German border. Since 2004, the village has been hosting the Trail du Petit Ballon, in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons des Vosges. The event takes place in March, the wind will be in your favor and even the snow that lingers on the peaks. Plan to stay warm: not with mulled wine, but with a windbreaker and scarf. 🌬
Covid or not, the 2021 edition will be held in September. You’re in luck—the temperatures will be milder and the vines will be in harvest season.
Four distances are offered: the Donkey 8 km, the Zinnkoepftrail (achieve your wishes) of 16 km! The Grand Crus 28 km and the Petit Ballon 54 km. The start and finish take place at the Rouffach stadium then head towards the vineyards with endless rows of grapes 🍇 that are renowned for their location and exceptional climate. Then across the village of Soulzmatt, and it's off to ascend through the forest with single-track and winding passages. Be prepared to elbow your way through! At the top of the Petit Ballon (1272m) you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view over the summits of the Vosges. After that it’s all downhill through forests and small villages until you reach the finish line of the Rouffach trail. The Grand Crus route, 28km, goes as far as the village of Osenbach before returning to the starting point. Don’t worry—you’ll also see vineyards and the Vosges forest, but with less elevation and a highest point not exceeding 585m above sea level.
As if the scenery wasn’t enough to satisfy you, the organizers treat you to a bottle of Alsace crémant as a reward. You’re in luck!
Hungry too? Among their specialties they offer fleiшchnacka (what’s that?), pasta dumplings filled with meat, perfect for refueling. All this paired with the sweet aromas of Alsace wines. 🍷
What better way to discover the region than to tread its hills with a little balloon glass! 😬
