Run des Tortues

Ah, Mayotte! Its wildlife, its flora, its gastronomy, its paradisical beaches, and... its trails? Yes, you read that right—Mayotte is also a land of sport. So if you’re in, lace up your shoes and grab your swimsuit and come run at the Run des Tortues 🐢 .

Launched in 2012 in the Overseas Territory of Mayotte, the race takes place on the Petite-Terre island in the town of Pamandzi 🏖. Between land and sea, we promise you a spectacular escape with panoramas unique in the world. In total, four distances are offered depending on your preparation: “ La Petite Terrienne” from 12 km, the “ Nyamba trail” from 21 km or if you’re in good shape “ La Mahoraise” from 63 km. If you prefer the turtle pace, you can opt for the “ la marche des Bouénis” from 10 km. Start and finish are at the Pamandzi Stadium. Island life means scorching heat. Like the turtles with their shells, shield yourself from the sun and the heat that reaches almost 30°C in March. So don’t forget to drink your Maji ("water" in Mahorian).

The course is winding, especially during the rise to Vigie (200 m above sea level) but you’ll be rewarded with a sublime panorama over the whole island. At the top, you can also see the fabulous Moya beach which is one of the largest green turtle nesting sites. There’s no need to rush—take your time, as in the fable of La Fontaine, to soak in this true island tableau. Don’t miss La Fontaine’s fable—enjoy a pause to soak in the view. Don’t miss Dziani Lake (even if it’s a must-see), jewels of Petite-Terre with its emerald hue. Imagine yourself running on an elevated path with the blue ocean on your left and the green lake on your right. Enchanting, isn’t it 🌊 ?

You’ll also notice tropical vegetation along the race paths. A variety of fruits can be found. The combawa, jackfruit or other exotic fruits 🍍, perfect for recharging after your race (or during if you pick them straight 🤤 ). Want something substantial? Mataba or Pilao are among Mayotte’s signature dishes to sample.
