La Saint Mauritaine

Do you know Saint-Maurice-l'Exil? No one has ever been exiled here, I promise, and yet everyone comes back every year at the end of September 😄. Stuck between the Rhône and the slopes, this Isère commune a short drive south of Vienne pulls out race bibs, aid stations, and neon-yellow vests for the Saintmauritaine, its big sporty and solidarity raid 🎉. Meet you in the middle of early summer : a crisp morning that tugs at the calves at the start, gentle sunshine that warms the finish, in short, the perfect weather to run without ending up in a puddle 🌤️.

On the playing field, the Saintmauritaine unpacks five formats, all starting from the Aqualône Nautical Center 🏊. The "21 km", the day’s centerpiece, features an XXL loop: head north along the Rhône and skirt around the Saint-Alban Nuclear Power Plant (yes, you’ll run with a view of the cooling towers, cinema-set vibes 🎬) before crossing back through the town, climbing toward the Parc des Varilles and slipping out into the eastern countryside. The "10 km" (11 real km on the clock, house gift 🎁) condenses the best: downtown, Parc des Varilles and a big green loop between woods and farm tracks. The "5 km" plays the bucolic card around the Plan d'Eau des Blaches 🦆, while the "9 km walk" takes the trails of the Varilles Park and the hills, and the "5 km gourmet walk" turns the stroll into a rolling tasting 🍽️. From asphalt to dirt, a touch of family-friendly trail: everyone leaves with their share of Saintmauritaine.

And above all, this race has a heart as big as this ❤️. A portion of ticket proceeds goes directly to the Centre Léon Bérard in Lyon, one of France’s leading cancer research centers 🎗️. Every registration, every stride, every bib pinned (even a bit crooked 🙃) helps fund research. We run for ourselves, sure, but also for those who are running a far tougher race, far harder than ours 💪. Add to that an army of cheerful volunteers and families lining the course, and you get that village-festival vibe that big urban machines envy 🥳.

After the finish, don’t rush off! The area is full of great excuses to linger 😎. A detour to Vienne is a must to admire the Ancient Theatre of Vienne, one of the grandest in the Roman Gaul, where your aches will feel tiny next to 2 000 years of History 🏛️. On the plate, the region plays it local: ravioles du Dauphiné, Saint-Marcellin wonderfully melty 🧀 and, for connoisseurs, a glass of Condrieu produced on the facing hills 🍷. Carbs matter for recovery, everyone knows that (but always in moderation! ⚠️).
