Urban Trail D’Hérouville-Saint-Clair

If you feel like crushing some elevation without traveling 500 km from home or rolling in the mud, the Urban Trail D'Herouville-Saint-Clair should probably entice you 🥰.

In May, when summer starts to peek around the corner and your biggest decision is between a floral tee or a sleeveless shirt 👔, the small town of Hérouville-Saint-Claire decides to host its local urban trail 🏙️. For the occasion, the weather is usually perfect, with sun on the surface and a north wind blowing between the city buildings. But that weekend, the real breeze might be the one you leave in your wake 💨. Over 10 or 15 km, depending on the distance you choose, you’ll loop around the Calvados town. The contrast between the old-world charm of the Domaine de Beauregard and the futurism of the Conservatoire de Musique will make you feel like you’re traveling somewhere between the Renaissance and 2050 🛸. So if you want your performance to mark the eras as well, pay attention to what follows 👀.

For this first edition, the organizers give you two options: a 10 km and 100 mD+ or a 15 km and 150 mD+ 🫵. In either case, you’ll encounter: beautiful buildings, a well-preserved castle and plenty of tarmac. However, each race has its own identity 🪪. The “Beauregard express” of 10 km will let you indulge while boosting your heart rate 🫀. Not short enough for everything to come down to power but too long to rely only on endurance. Its big sister is the “Grande Couronne” of 15 km. But beware, if you want to walk away with the gold medal and the title of “King of Hérouville-Saint-Clair" 👑, you’ll have to extend your stride and not get absorbed by the surrounding scenery. And with all the lovely monuments you’ll pass and the parcours vibe, the mindset will be required to avoid getting distracted 🫨. In Normandy, you won’t just cover kilometers: you’ll push the machine, keep it moving, have fun, but most of all collect memories 🏰.

And after the effort, the reward! 😴 Less than an hour’s drive away, you’ll have plenty to do. Locals like to say: "In Normandy, we know when we’re coming, but we never know if we’re leaving" (or is that just what Finishers say? 🤔). Either way, Caen, just a few kilometers away, is likely to act like a magnet on you 😋. After discovering the Caen Castle in a Renaissance style, you can compare your observations to the Château de Caen, located in the city center. With all the stairs there, the ramparts, and the size of the building, you’ll get a nice active recovery 😅. If you’re more into greenery, after running around 15 km in the nearby city, you can set your GPS to the Jardin des Plantes 🪴, or the Parc de la Colline aux Oiseaux. These two green spaces Caennais are the city’s real green lungs 🫁. If you really want to get away from any urban area, the north of the Calvados suits you down to the ground 🇫🇷. The beaches of Ouistreham or Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer offer wide breaths of fresh air, with a view of the sea and a tasty break 🐟.

So, if you want to take on an urban trail with character, aim for the “Grande Couronne” at the start of summer and shake up the realm of Normandy 👑. It’s going to bring the thunder, that’s for sure (Saint-Clair) 🪵.
