Trail du Vieil-Armand

Embark on a journey to discover the Parc Naturel Régional des Ballons des Vosges, tracing the trenches of the First World War, with this Trail du Vieil-Armand in Wuenheim, in the Haut-Rhin department. You’ll see, no one gets tired of Alsace! 😉

To discover these landscapes under the sunny sky of March, the organizers have prepared three races to suit your fitness and desires. First, the “Printanière” of 8.5 km with a positive elevation gain of 170m D+. Next, the “ Trail Découverte” of 14 km with 500m D+. Finally, the “ Trail du Vieil-Armand” of 25 km with 1100m D+. ✌️

The start of all 3 trails is the same. For the Printanière, you’ll head toward the brook of Wuenheim via a false flat. You’ll later follow the shared path again through the pine forest before reaching the vineyard. A little bonus: you can run as a couple by taking part in “ Elle et Lui” with the challenge of crossing the line hand in hand. If that’s not cute! 🥰

For the other routes, you’ll climb the ridge of the “sugar loaves”, you’ll pass by several forts (Beskid, Adlerhorst, Doppelkopf). To descend to the domain of Hirtz, you won’t tremble at the place called Hexenküche which literally means “witches’ kitchen” 🧙‍♀️, in memory of the bombings during the offensives of 14-18. Then you’ll tackle the ascent of the “ Suisse lippique” and the fortified rock Unter-Rehfelsen, before returning, as at the start of the route, to the cantine Zeller, the German command center. 📌

After the race, you can take some time to explore the surroundings of Wuenheim and the Vosges mountain range. If you love birds, it’s a great spot to watch storks, the emblem of Alsace. And to replenish your energy, flammenkueche, Black Forest and Riesling will delight you with the region. 😋
