About this event
The Bangkok Marathon stands out with a night race, starting at midnight in front of the Grand Palace, in the tropical heat of November. Established since 1987, it brings together up to 30,000 participants and offers a marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km, all starts and finishes on Sanam Chai Road. The flat course and iconic monuments provide a unique experience in Southeast Asia.
There are marathons that are run during the day ☀️, and a marathon that are run at night. And then there’s the Bangkok Marathon, which takes place at midnight, in front of the Grand Royal Palace, in tropical November heat, with illuminated temples as the backdrop. If this sentence hasn’t convinced you yet, read on anyway. 🌙
The Bangkok Marathon has been organized since 1987, making it one of the oldest and most established marathons in Southeast Asia. In 1987, the race was held in honor of the King’s 60th birthday and helped spark a real running boom in Thailand 🇹🇭. A great origin story, right? 😉 The latest edition counted 30,000 participants across all distances, a figure that speaks to the event’s scale in the Asian running scene 🏆. The detail that absolutely changes the experience of this race, and makes it unique among the world’s major marathons: the race runs at night or in the early hours of the morning to avoid Bangkok’s oppressive heat. The half marathon starts at 2h. While the rest of the world sleeps or watches shows, you dive from light into the closed streets of Bangkok as the city wakes around you 🌃. The start and finish are on Sanam Chai Road, in front of the Grand Palace Royal and the Wat Phra Kaew, or in front of the Ministry of Defensedepending on the setup. Starting from one of the city’s most symbolically loaded squares to run a night-time distance: a one-of-a-kind experience. You won’t even pass 100 meters before you’ve already captured a mental snapshot for life. 📸
The course is certified by the AIMS and complies with IAAF rules, meaning internationally recognized qualifying times and standardized measurement. The men’s record for the BKK Marathon is 2h16'10 set in 2010 by Kennedy Lilan, and the women's record of 2h41'37 set in 2012 by Elizabeth Chemweno. These records have stood for over a decade on a flat, fast course, proof that nocturnal conditions and the route lend themselves to strong performances when the weather cooperates. The profile is almost flat, Bangkok sitting on a delta just a few meters above sea level. No topographic traps to manage... just heat, humidity, and 42 km to swallow. 💨
The route is a tour of the city’s iconic landmarks, traversed at a time when normally only night-time tuk-tuk drivers and late-night street-food lovers are up 🚕. The course passes by the Victory Monument, the King Rama V Monument, the Rama VIII Bridge and the Democracy Monument. The Victory Monument is the central star of the course ⭐️, this massive obelisk at the heart of one of Bangkok’s busiest roundabouts Bangkok, lit up at night, with several thousand runners circling it: that’s the sort of moment that makes you glance at your watch ⌚️. The Wat Benchamabophit (The Marble Temple) is one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples in all of the Thailand, with its façade of Carrara marble imported from Italy. The Ratchadamnoen Avenue, often dubbed the Thai Champs-Élysées, is a long boulevard lined with historic buildings offering a majestic stretch for a runner’s mindset 🏃. And the Rama VIII Bridge, this asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge that spans the Chao Phraya, provides a crossing with river views at the exact moment the sky shifts from black to night-blue. It’s hard to top that for cinematic. 🌉
To be honest about the weather, and the organizers are too, which is why the race is scheduled at midnight for this reason. Bangkok in November is technically the “cool” season, but cool in Thai terms means around 26-28°C with high humidity 💦. The unanimous advice from regulars: train in the heat beforehand, wear ultra-light clothing, and don’t go out with a record-attempt pace if it’s your first tropical conditions experience. The body takes a bit to understand what it’s asked to do at 30°C and 80% humidity. 🥵
Four distances cover the full range of runners. The marathon (42.195 km) remains the premier event, with a midnight start and a dawn finish in front of the Grand Palace, one of the most spectacular finishes on the Asian calendar. The half-marathon (21,097 km) starts at 2:00 a.m. and shares the race’s most iconic portions. The 10 km and the 5 km complete the lineup for families and runners who want to soak up the event atmosphere without tackling the longer nocturnal distances. The start of all events is on Sanam Chai Road, with the finish on the Grand Palace Royal 🏰.
Until then, there’s still a little time to explore Bangkok, grab some pad thai, and decide whether your pacing plan accounts for the heat. Here’s hoping it does 😬.
