Let's head to Bucharest, the Romanian capital nicknamed the “ Little Paris ” in the East, for its Boulevard of Belle Époque vibes, its cafés and even its own Arc de Triompheplanted in the middle of a giant roundabout! 🏛️ Each year on an October weekend, the city rolls out its course for the Bucharest Marathon, officially the Maratonul Internațional București, aka the largest running event in Romania 🇷🇴. The marathon takes center stage, supported by a four-person relay, a half marathon, a 10 km and a fun-format 2.5 km. With that, what better way to line up a massive field of runners from the four corners of the globe on the same starting line 🗺️.

The adventure starts long ago: a marathon was already tracing the capital's pavements back in 1992but in a version kept secret 🤫. The modern formula, the one that propelled the current event, was born in 2008 under the impulse of the Bucharest Running Club, the organization that still runs the event today. In just a few editions, the rendezvous climbed the ranks and even earned the Bronze label from World Athletics, a true seal of quality on the international circuit! 🌎 The only sour note in this ascent: the edition 2020, stopped dead the lead-up to departure on demand by authorities in the midst of the health context 🦠. The race bounced back the very next year to resume its forward march, and has stayed true to its autumn niche 🍂.

As for the course, it checks the “rolling” box without hesitation 🤓. Flat and fast, it starts from the Izvor Park, in the center, runs along broad avenues and the old town before turning toward the Constitution Square 📍. There, at the end of the effort, stands the colossal Palace of the Parliament, the heaviest civil building on the planet and Europe’s largest edifice, serving as the backdrop to your finish line 🏁. Between the straight boulevards, the hubs in the historic center and the monumental setting, you stack landmark after landmark without ever letting foot off the gas 👟. Little elevation, long straights, turns count on one hand : this is a course tailored for fast times, where record chasers find a legit boulevard, in every sense ⚡️.

On the menu front, the event knows how to welcome all ambitions ✨. The marathon remains the showpiece, its 42,195 km served on a flat course, where the elite often goes head-to-head 😲. Right behind, the half marathon halves the distance while keeping the fun of the finish line. Perfect for anyone aiming for their first big long-distance date 💡. The 10 km leans into speed and accessibility, to go for a clean clock or to debut their very first bib 🎟️. Friends’ groups and corporate teams, they share the marathon on a four-person relay, baton in hand and team spirit slung over the shoulder 🤝. As for the playful format of 2.5 km, it opens its arms to the families, to the young ones and to handisport runners, so everyone can enjoy the party without chasing the clock 🥵.

Beyond the distances, the event cultivates a vibe all its own 🙂‍↔️. The city shuts down its major arteries for a weekend, and the mix of nationalities, now from over 50 countries gathered across the formats! All of this gives a cosmopolitan scent to this autumn festival 🍂. Up front, pace is fast: the event record hovers around 2h11 for men, and 2h33 for women. Medal around the neck, time to savor a tasty recovery 😋. The Romanian table takes care of its finishers with mici small skinless grilled sausages, the sarmales stuffed cabbage leaves, and the papanași doughnuts draped in cream and jam, all washed down with a țuică plum brandy that wakes up heavy legs (alcohol should be consumed in moderation) 🍷. Between courses, the Lipscani old town the Romanian Village Museum and the Herăstrău Park— the King Michael I Grand Park — are worth a detour to stretch your legs and digest the kilometers logged 🧘‍♀️.
