About this event

The Doha Marathon is a road race that has established itself as a premier event in the Middle East and North Africa, with Gold label and sub-2h10 performances for men and sub-2h21 for women. Running along Doha’s Corniche, the flat course offers maritime views and a cosmopolitan atmosphere, while actively supporting local causes through fundraising. Each edition attracts runners from 140 countries and features an Al Adaam event for Qataris, held on a Friday in January.

There are marathons that have always been part of the landscape. Boston, with its 130 years of pavement and tradition. Berlin, with its walls come down and its world records. And then there’s the Marathon of Doha 🇶🇦, a young upstart born in 2013, which in about a dozen years has established itself as one of the cannot-miss events on the global running calendar in the Middle East and Africa North. The rapid rise of this race, mirroring the host country’s ascent, can be a bit dizzying 🫨.

It all began on the 26 January 2013 with a modest first edition: a half marathon, a few hundred runners starting from the Museum of Islamic Art and looping back to where they started 📖. The start was quiet, almost timid. But in Qatar, ambition is never far away, and the race grew quickly. Very quickly ⚡️. By 2023, the marathon earned the label World Athletics Elite. Then in quick succession, the Gold Label (the supreme distinction awarded by the world athletics federation) which places the race among the 25 best road races on the planet 🥇.

That Gold label isn't just a badge slapped on a bib for looks. It imposes concrete requirements: a course certified to international standards, state-of-the-art timing system, compliance with anti-doping rules, presence of international elite athletes, aid stations, medical support, recovery zones... In short, an organization on par with the biggest 🫡. It also means that runners crossing the Doha finish line can earn World Athletics World ranking points and snag qualifications for World Championships and the Olympic Games ⚡. Not bad, right! 🤓

And the elites have understood it. In the edition 2026, the current Olympic champion Tamirat Tola (Ethiopia), winner at the Paris 2024 Games, set the course record with a time of 2h05'40 🏆. In a sprint between Ethiopian countrymen, the first five men all finished under 2h07'30, a remarkable concentration of performance. Among the women, his compatriot Tigist Gezahagn led the race in 2h21'14. For a marathon that started with only a few hundred participants, to host the Olympic champion in action is a fairly remarkable trajectory.

The course itself is one of the event’s major strengths. It runs entirely along the Doha Corniche, a long waterfront promenade that hugs the bay and is the city’s most spectacular artery 🌊. Start and finish in the same place, in front of the Hotel Park near the iconic Sheraton Grand Doha Resort 🏨. From there, runners head toward the promenade, running along the seaside with the luminous skyscrapers of the West Bay 🏙️, the Qatari capital’s business district, reflecting in the waters of the Persian Gulf 🌊. The route also passes through the districts of Katara, the cultural village, and stretches to the wide, modern avenues of Lusail, the purpose-built new city north of Doha and which hosted the 2022 World Cup final 🏟️. The course profile is very flat, making it technically a fast-course race ⏱️. No climbs, no steep bridge, no sneaky hills, just smooth pavement and kilometers of sea views 🐬.

The race is held every year in January, which is no accident. It’s the cool season in the Qatar (everything’s relative, obviously 😅), with temperatures hovering around 15 to 20°C in the early morning at start time. Europeans arriving in sweaters and ending up sweating within the first kilometer will appreciate it. For Gulf regulars, it’s basically the "winter" ❄️. The marathon actually starts early in the morning: the start of the distance of champions is at 6:15 a.m., so as to take advantage of the coolest conditions possible before the sun decides to show a bit too much enthusiasm ☀️. The half marathon starts at 7:35 a.m., the 10 km at 8:30 a.m., the 5 km at 9:10 a.m.

What makes this marathon particularly unique in its DNA is the charity dimension that is intrinsically linked to it 🧬. Since its inception, all proceeds from entry fees are donated to local associations. It isn’t a publicity stunt: it’s the event’s raison d’être, conceived by the title sponsor and the organizer as a tool for social as well as athletic transformation. The race aims to promote active living in a country where sedentary living is a real public health challenge, and to bring together a diverse community around a common effort 👊. Another local and rather tasty peculiarity: the category Al Adaam 🎖️. This special event, integrated into the marathon in recent years, is dedicated to runners qataris and offers separate cash prizes to reward and encourage national participation 🇶🇦. In other words, if you’re Qatari and cross the finish line, you’re competing in two categories at once. A nice local nudge in a highly international event and a fairly elegant way to anchor the race in the host country’s identity.

And speaking of international: the 2025 edition drew 15,000 runners from 140 countries: a new absolute record for the event 🌍. To put it in perspective, 140 nationalities represented in a single start means nearly a third of the world’s countries are gathered on the Doha Corniche on a January Friday morning. Because yes, the race takes place on a Friday, a weekend day in Qatar. Plan accordingly 🤪.

At the stroke of the clock, all finishers receive a medal and automatically enter a random draw with prizes that have sometimes included cars 🚗. It’s a distinctly Qatari way of thanking participants: here, they don’t do things halfway. And for those who don’t luck out with a car key in their pocket, there’s the memory of a few hours running beside the Gulf, with a futuristic skyline and the sunlit reflections on the water, which, let’s admit it, isn’t bad either ✨.
