Marathon de Lanzarote

"Ponteerse las pilas" ! You’ll probably hear this phrase if you decide to take part in the Lanzarote Marathon which takes place in Spain 🇪🇸, set against the stunning backdrop of the Canary Islands🐤. The translation is simple: "get energized" and shift into high gear! 🔋 Wondering why we say that? Well, because you’ll probably get distracted by the spectacular show unfolding before you! Located on the island of Lanzarote, the easternmost of the 7 Canary Islands, the Font Vella Lanzarote International Marathon offers you 3 races including one that’s wheelchair-accessible 🙌. So lace up your shoes and join us as we tread the volcanic rock 🌋 and the magma that covers this breathtaking island! 😮

The seafront 🌊 is, in fact, the scene you’ll run along! Along the coast of the 4 towns of Costa Teguise, Arrecife, San Bartholomé and Puerto del Carmen, you’ll see the beaches of the Spanish coastline 😍 (more than 26 km of beaches on this island alone! 😮), the turquoise water, the sun 🌞, caves and cliffs carved by the Timanfaya eruption. On foot or in a wheelchair (only for the half marathon), the pavement will be all yours since it’s been privatized for the occasion. You’ll then be able to fully enjoy the spectacular 👁️ view of the Telamon wreck 🚢 that has stood for 40 years right in the middle of the bay, as well as the airplane traffic ✈️ just tens of meters above your head 🙄. Indeed, Lanzarote airport at the end of the runway will let you watch the nonstop ballet of planes... A race that promises to be unique and unconventional, right? 😬

For a bit of history, the 'island of Lanzarote, nicknamed"the island of 1000 volcanoes", hosts the Timanfaya, located in the middle of a vast natural park bearing its name 🌋. And it’s not just in that regard that the volcano has marked the history of the Canaries! 🐥 In 1730, the volcano erupted and spilled a colossal amount of lava for over 6 years. Covering 3/4 of the island in magma 🔥. The result is a breathtaking landscape where aridity, desert, sandy beaches, underground caverns, cacti, lush vegetation, vineyards and volcanic craters mix together 🤩. So if you want to recharge after the rush of the race, you can always enjoy the island’s silent, lunar atmosphere 🌝. A restrained tourism that particularly allows locals to Charco del Palo be themselves... in their naturist village 🫣. No judgment here! 😆 We’d do the same if we were in their shoes given the island’s optimal weather (19° in December 😎)!

Designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve 🌍, Lanzarote offers a wildlife and a rich flora. It is especially known for being a premier ornithological site and for its many cacti and other endemic species 🕊. If you love cacti 🌵, you can always head to the garden which houses more than 1,400 species (but watch where you step 😅). Beyond that, you can also explore the island’s numerous palm groves 🌴 and its vineyards unique in the world 🍇. So don’t hesitate to grab a bottle when you go bask in the sun of Spain 🇪🇦, with your feet in the Atlantic Ocean 🍷😎. You’ll also be able to admire some of the 300 craters 🤯 that dot the island after your race. Heads up! ⚠️ While kids will love it, you’ll need to supervise as temperatures climb very high 🥵 (but don’t worry, experienced guides will tell you all you need to know). Some have even managed to exploit these heat geysers, like the famous restaurant "El Diablo" which grills its dishes on a volcanic stove. Tempting, isn’t it?
