Le Tour de Helvellyn est un circuit exigeant de 61 km qui commence et se termine au centre communautaire d’Askham, faisant le tour du Helvellyn par des sentiers de montagne, des chemins cavaliers et des sentiers pédestres. Avec de multiples ascensions atteignant près de 600 m — et un dénivelé total d’environ 2 000 m —, cet événement hivernal peu médiatisé est destiné aux athlètes qui s’épanouissent dans des environnements exigeants. Le parcours n’est pas balisé, traverse un terrain montagneux difficile et comporte souvent des sections qui mettent à l’épreuve même les compétences de navigation les plus avancées, en particulier dans des conditions défavorables. Aucun balisage ni assistance significative n’est fourni ; de solides compétences en montagne en hiver, une grande autonomie et une expérience préalable de la course sur sentier ou en montagne sont indispensables.
