In Michalovce, around Zemplínska šírava lake, Podvihorlatský marathon offers a scenic run with a course around the water and the Vihorlat volcanic range. Participants can tackle the 42.2 km or the half marathon, on a slightly hilly paved profile, a perfect endurance test. After the effort, enjoy the traditional holubky, then stroll to Morské oko lake or Vinianky castle before enjoying the pools of Thermalpark Šírava.
Michalovce and the picturesque region of the Zemplínska šírava lake, nicknamed familiarly the “Slovak sea,” invite you to a true sports celebration. The Podvihorlatský marathon is an exceptionally scenic race, its course winding around this vast body of water, offering stunning views of the range of the Vihorlat volcanic mountains🏞️, densely wooded and dominating the distant horizon. Participants will find the classic full marathon distance of 42.2 km as well as a half marathon half that length, and a slightly hilly asphalt profile makes for an excellent endurance test in running🏃. Wondering how to plan a well-deserved rest after such a demanding start?🤔
To compensate for the calories burned, I recommend tasting the traditional holubky from Zemplín, delicious stuffed cabbage that will perfectly replenish you after miles of running🍽️. Once you’re back on your feet, take the family for a small mountain getaway, to reach by a forest path the charming volcanic lake Morské oko, located just half an hour from the event center. For couples, an excellent option is a romantic stroll to the nearby ruins of the Vinianky Castle, from where you get a spectacular view over the entire valley🏰. If, however, you’re dreaming only of soothing very tired legs, simply head to the Thermalpark Šírava modern complex, where warm pools will fully rejuvenate you after the athletic exertions!🎉
