Marathon Cowtown

Fort Worth carries a nickname that smells of leather and dust: “Cowtown,” the cattle city 🤠. Cradle of the great cattle drives of old Texas, it trades its horns for race bibs every late February to host the Cowtown Marathon, one of the oldest and most popular marathons in the Texas, right at the southern tip of the United States. Spanning over two days, the event brings together nearly 28,000 runners from all 50 states and around fifteen countries 🌎. A big Texan city that, for a weekend, gallops to the rhythm of footsteps rather than hooves 🐴.

Six formats share the weekend, from the gentlest to the toughest 🏃. Saturday kicks things off with a 5K, a 10K (a run for everyone) and a kids’ race, before Sunday unleashes the big guns 🥇. The half marathon of 21.1 km, the marathon of 42,195 km, and the 50 km ultra (an ultra-marathon following the marathon route before adding a loop along the river) send the legs to the party 🥳. The more ambitious aim for a spot in the mythical Boston Marathon, as both the 42 km and the 50 km are qualifying events 🎫. Do watch out for a few hills, including the famous climb of the 9th mile, where you’ll quickly understand that Texas isn’t as flat as you might think 😅.

In terms of scenery, the course offers a guided tour of Fort Worth 🎸. Start from the Cultural District, then head toward the Stockyards, the historic district where real longhorns still parade on cobbled streets, cattle scents included 🐂. Next stop is the downtown and Sundance Square, along the campus of the TCU, then makes its way to the banks of the Trinity River and the botanical garden 🌳. Fanfare, DJs and live bands liven almost every mile, and about thirty cheering zones turn the race into a real urban parade, punctuated by the “Blue Mile” in tribute to fallen military personnel and first responders.

Behind the celebration lies a noble cause 👟. Born in 1979 with a simple 10 km and a marathon, the Cowtown grew over the decades, adding the 5 km, the semi then the ultra to become the largest multi-distance race in northern Texas. Most importantly, the event donates its proceeds to the CALF program., whose acronym stands for “veal” in English, a perfect wink to the cattle town 🐄. This charitable initiative reaches thousands of schoolchildren with running programs and provides new sneakers to children from modest families across hundreds of local schools 🧡.

On the vibe side, the Texas always goes big 🎉. More than 4,000 volunteers and hundreds of police officers keep things in check, while runners at the finish receive a cowboy hat-shaped medal… which also doubles as a bell 🔔. A family-friendly as well as athletic challenge, the race welcomes both a child’s first 5K and veterans who sometimes travel from the far corner of North America in search of a qualifier, in a warmth that feels straight out of Texas culture. And the February weather, capricious as it is, sometimes requires bundling up before sweating under the sun 🥶.

Once the bell medal sits around the neck, Fort Worth invites you to keep the party going 🍖. Head to the Stockyards to witness a real urban cattle drive and push open the doors of the honky-tonks, or downtown with its acclaimed art museums for a softer pause. And to refuel, nothing beats a slow-smoked brisket, hours on end, a Texan barbecue specialty from which you never quite recover 😋.

Between longhorns’ horns, marching bands and the bell medal, the Cowtown Marathon feels like an enormous Texas village festival, XXL in scale, where every stride is run with a smile 🤠.
