Take on the wild meanders of the Pinde mountains in northwestern Greece, in the Zagori region listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Zagori Mountain Running offers varied distances (TeRA 60 km, 33 km, 21 km and 10 km) through Tymfi, the Vikos Gorge and stone bridges, passing through traditional slate houses. After the effort, admire Oxya and Aghia Paraskevi, then savor local specialties such as Alevropita, Kreatopita and Tsipouro.
Take on the wild and spectacular serpentine trails of the Pindus Mountains in northwestern Greece! Zagori Mountain Running is one of Europe’s most important and picturesque mountain races, held in the region of Zagori (UNESCO World Heritage site). Runners can choose from a range of distances: from the grueling ultra TeRA 60 km, to the mountain marathon 33 km, via the 21 km and the shortest 10 km 🏃. The course runs along the stark ridges of the Tymfi massif, skirting the monumental Vikos Gorge and passing through fairy-tale 19th‑century stone bridges and slate-red villages.
After crossing the finish line and catching your breath, the iconic Zagorochoria region invites you to an incredible Greek-style mountain unwind:
Meet at the lookout point Oxya or at the monastery Aghia Paraskevi perched on the rock at Monodendri, where you’ll be treated to a vertical, breathtaking view of the Vikos Gorge (one of the deepest canyons in the world) 🏞️. Families can discover the famed, refined stone-arched bridges journey – with the iconic Plakidas Bridge (Kalogeriko) at three levels above – or refresh tired legs in the crystal-clear and emerald waters of the Voidomatis river 🌉. And how about a trek to the legendary Drakolimni? Dragon Lake, perched high in the Tymfi mountains, is a postglacial basin (over 2000 m above sea level) home to small alpine newts that look like miniature dragons 🐉.
To finish the day, savor the regional pride of Epirus with crispy traditional filo pastries, like the Alevropita (cheese pie) or the Kreatopita (meat pie). For bigger appetites, order slow-roasted lamb and celebrate your achievement with a glass of local anisated wine Tsipouro 🍷.
