Taipei is a fast-moving metropolis, and everyone knows it! 💨

Every November, the Taiwanese capital transforms into an open-air arena for a weekend 🏙️. The Standard Chartered Taipei Charity Marathon isn’t just another urban marathon 😍. It’s the island’s largest charitable marathon 😲.

Born in 2013, sparked by Standard Chartered, one of the major international banks in Taiwanthe SCTCM kicked off with a simple yet powerful idea: turn every kilometer run into a act of solidarity 🤝. The following year, in 2014, the event earned the Sports Promoter Award - Gold Award for Sponsorship from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education 👩‍🎓. In ten years, the race has raised over 130 million New Taiwan Dollars (NTD) in donations, proving that generosity, when you lace up sneakers, goes far 💶. The SCTCM is among Standard Chartered’s top ten races worldwide, from Nairobi to Singapore, raising funds for the Futuremakers initiative, the bank’s global effort to reduce economic inequality for underprivileged youths 👏.

The marathon route starts from the Ketagalan Boulevard, the symbolic artery along the Presidential Palace of Taipei, so you know you’re starting with a history-filled breath 🏛️. The race then heads onto Zhongshan Road, one of the city’s great north-south avenues, before crossing the Zhongshan Bridge to the banks of the Keelung River 💧. It’s here that the marathon reveals its true character: kilometer after kilometer along the riverfront parks of Nangang, Chengmei and Guanshan, where bike paths border a peaceful river and sakura petals, seasonally, drift onto the pavement 🌸. The course alternates between smoothly-paved urban avenues and green park sections that are a touch more technical under the ramp access to MacArthur Bridges 🌉. The finish is not far from the Dazhi Bridgein a northeastern residential district of the city📍. For those who prefer a gentler warm-up, a half-marathon, a 11 km and a fun run of 3 km complete the program, letting the whole family join in the collective effort 👶.

On the timing side, the SCTCM plays in the big leagues. 🌍 In the men's marathon, it was won by Kenyan Paul Lonyangata who reigned in 2020 by setting the course record at 2h09'18" 🚀. That time places the event among serious international-level competitions 🌍. In the women's side, Ethiopian Alemtsehay Asifa captured back-to-back titles in 2021-2022 and still holds the course record at 2h25'55" 💨. The SCTCM’s international reputation is also reflected in participation stats: 26,000 runners from 51 countries start each year, with participants up to 88 years on the clock 😮. The event is certified AIMS and World Athleticsand recently ranks among AbbottWMM MTT Age Group Rankings, a global age-group rankings system for the Majors circuit. For Taiwanese runners, it’s a direct gateway to international competition without leaving the island 🏆. What truly sets the SCTCM apart from the rest of the calendar is its unapologetic, solidarity-driven DNA 🧡. Organizers actively encourage every participant to raise funds in addition to running, afundraising system that helped raise, during the last edition, a remarkable 840,000 NTD in personal donations, for a total across all sources of 3.19 million NTD 🙌. Moreover, the presence of 51 nationalities lends the event a cosmopolitan atmosphere rare for an Asian race of this scale, and the banks of the Keelung River offer a spectacular backdrop for spectators waving signs and improvised vuvuzelas 🎉.

After the effort, the city treats you to a post-race reward: a bowl of beef noodle soup in one of the neighborhood eateries in Da'an worth more than any sports drink in the world ⚡️. And if the legs can still take it, a visit to the National Palace Museum or an ascent to Taipei 101, to take in the route from 509 m up, and to realize that, indeed, we didn’t slouch 😅.
