The Banská Bystrica Marathon offers a sporty and musical night in the heart of Slovakia, with Europe’s only evening marathon and an entirely staged ambiance on a flat and fast central-city course. Runners can choose between marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 5 km, and relay, then savor local dishes and a Urpiner beer after crossing the finish line. Explore the emblematic sites of Banská Bystrica, such as SNP Square and the SNP Museum, within a mountainous surrounding setting.
Dive into a night full of music in the heart of Slovakia! Banskobystrický maratón (Marathon of Banská Bystrica) is a unique event and one of the biggest running celebrations among our southern neighbors, famed as the only evening marathon in Central Europe, with a fully produced soundscape and musical zones along the course 🏃🌃. Runners can choose from the full marathon distance (42.2 km), the half marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km race, a 5 km race, relay events, as well as kids’ races. The route features flat, fast loops on city streets closed to traffic, with a race village near the Europa SC center; the twilight start, illuminated streets, and warm local encouragement create a unique, energy-filled atmosphere.
After crossing the finish line, Banská Bystrica and the surrounding mountains of the Veľká Fatra and the Kremnické Hills invite you to a rewarding, emotion-packed relaxation! Stroll through one of Slovakia’s most beautiful squares – Námestie SNP with its leaning clock tower (Hodinová veža), its Renaissance houses and the urban castle (Barbakán), and discover the monumental building of the Slovak National Uprising Museum (Múzeum SNP) 🏛️. Head to the nearby town of Hronsek to admire the only wooden articulated church built entirely of wood (UNESCO), or explore the fairy-tale world of stalactites in the Harmanecká jaskyňa (Harmanecká jaskyňa) 🌲🦇. Visit the historic village Špania Dolina just a few kilometers from the city – an old copper miners’ village with traditional houses, surrounded by hiking trails in the Veľká Fatra range (Veľká Fatra 🏔️.
