In Oyonnax, in Ain, the Trace des Maquisards de l’Ain brings together trail and night run enthusiasts in tribute to World War II maquisards. Four distances — 10 km, 28 km, 42 km and 100 km — including the ultra that can be run in relay, offer a sporty and historical experience in February at the heart of the Bugey and Haut-Jura landscapes. Pushing oneself, memory, and discovery of the territory shape this day where everyone can fuse history and camaraderie.
Today, we are running the Trace des Maquisards de l'Ain, a must-do early-season race for lovers of trail and night running 🌒. This running event is held in honor of maquisards who fought the Nazi occupation during the Second World War 👏 in the mountains ⛰️ of the Bugey and the Haut-Jura. Revisit their daily life in a sporty and historical experience in the heart of February (gla-gla-gla 🥶). Every stride 🏃♀️ brings you a little closer to the History of France! 🇫🇷
Thus, it’s a day of commemoration awaiting you, but also of self-transcendence and discovery. Head to the small town of Oyonnax, also known as the "Plastics Valley" for its industrial heritage 🏭, nestled in the heart of the Ain, in the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 🏔️. An extraordinary setting with wild, silent mountains, its flora 🌲 and its foxes 🦊, but above all its hidden monuments in the middle of the forest... 🫢 Four trails are offered: a 10 km, a 28 km, a 42 km and a 100 km. Oh, and the ultra-trail can also be run in relay of two or four. 👯 As is well known, the more participants, the more fun... 🤭 No matter which distance you choose, the course is bound to shake you up. The Trace des Maquisards de l'Ain is a tribute to freedom and to the camaraderie. You will run alongside athletes from all generations, here to brave the cold winter 🌬️ and keep alive the memories of these heroes. 🤍
Running through the Ain, is a bit like diving into French history. Several notable sites dot the region, such as the Monastère Royal de Brou ⛪, where the Municipal Museum of Bourg-en-Bresse 🖼️. Otherwise, we recommend the medieval town of Pérouges, listed among the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, as well as Belley and its cathedral. You can plan a visit to the Château des Allymes 🏰 accessible by horse, or to the viaduc de Cize-Bolozon. And since we're talking about water, know that the department is rich in rivers 💧 and in lakes, including the Lac Genin which you will partially follow during your race. But will you deserve after your race a rest at the thermal spa of Divonne-les-Bains ? Only you know! 😆 Additionally, the natural heritage of the region also includes the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Jura, which is just above Oyonnax.. A treasure trove of culture and history for an entire weekend! 🤩
