The Trail des Citadelles invites you to challenge the trails around Lavelanet, in Ariège, in April. Four distances offer up to 3,300 m D+ for intense climbs on a large-loop course, with landscapes of gorges, waterfalls and forests. Significant elevation gain and views over the Pays d’Olmes make this race a demanding and spectacular trail event.
Want to test yourself against the world’s best trail runners in a nature-filled race with plenty of elevation? Then set your sights on Ariège and Lavelanet, the hometown of the divine bald Fabien Barthez 👨🦲, goalkeeper and lucky charm of the France World Cup-winning team in 1998! 🏆 In the heart of Occitania, join this adventure on Ariègean soil in April in the Pays d’Olmes, renowned for its textile activity and industrial past.
Le Trail des Citadelles, that’s not for the faint-hearted! The organizers offer you 4 distances and it goes hard: a 10 km with 500 mD+, 24 km with 1 200 mD+, 40 km with 2 000 mD+ and 70 km 3 300 mD+. Needless to say, optimal fitness is recommended to participate. 🏋️♂️
The route is a kind of big loop around the town of Lavelanet. Located on both banks of the Touyre a mountain torrent as seen in postcards, the town overlooks the forested lands of Pays d’Olmes and offers a magnificent view of the Pyrenees range ⛰ and the Cathar fortress of Montségur. 🏰 By the way, after the race you’ll likely enjoy it more than during the trail, since the climb to reach it is as endless as it is grueling, after a pass through the Col du Tremblement of dirt. The steep trails are part of the charm and, paradoxically, the challenge of the event; you’ll realize it quickly. 🥵
When it comes to climbs, you’ll be well served with the Madoual ridges, the crossing of the wine domaine of Belesta, then the ruins of Péchiquelle. The streams and forest single tracks won’t be a mystery to you. 🌲 Good news: there are small water fountains to quench your thirst and catch your breath with all that effort. 🚰
Discovering the Roquefort Falls the Gorges de Péreille and the castle of Roquefixade are highlights of this Trail des Citadelles. Before finishing your journey, the Raissac Wall will be your final judge. Don’t let your lactate-filled legs distract you! It’s all in the head! 🙇 One tip: think of l’azinat (I want you if you want me... 🎵) and of mounjetado, two must-try Ariège specialties in the area.
