Craving a getaway far from the city? The Orris Trail takes you to Occitanie, Ariège, starting from and returning to Laroque-d’Olmes. Created in 2014, it offers every November two routes: Tour de Mouillet (11 km) and Orris Trail (19 km), with forest trails, a few technical sections, and only 3 meters of tarmac. After the race, savor Bethmale and croustade and breathe in the regional landscapes.

The Trail des Orris is made for you, a total immersion in the land of the Cathars (and not of the Qataris 😂) awaiting you. Located in Occitanie, in Ariège, about twenty kilometers from Foix, Laroque-d’Olmes is the starting and finishing town of the Trail des Orris. Created in 2014, two courses are offered each year in November: the “ Tour de Mouillet ” of 11 km and the “ Trail des Orris ” of 19 km. For reference, it climbs a bit but some sections can be technical, so watch out for the roughness (a fall in Occitan dialect)! Usually no rain and temperatures around 10° C, perfect conditions to perform 🏃♂️ .
But by the way, what is an Orri ? It’s a shelter where the shepherd lived during transhumance 🐑 . A stone cottage typical of Ariège and the Pyrenees. You’re not a shepherd, so if you spot one, keep going and enjoy the panorama the region offers. But also look at your feet because the trails won’t give you a moment’s rest. Pebbles, leaves, rocks, roots, trees… a very dense forest that will do its best to slow you down. But it will also show you its finest assets: forest trails accessible only during the race, unexpected encounters with cows, viewpoints over the municipalities of Sautel, Ilhat and Lavelanet. For those allergic to urbanization, the trail features only 3 meters of asphalt, manageable right?
After your race, take a stroll in Foix (the religious people’s favorite spot) and visit its famous castle towering above the town on its rock 🏰 . A Cathar stronghold that Catholic forces never captured during the Crusade. So, go conquer this fabulous monument that will surely transport you to the knights’ era.
For a proper feast, you can’t leave without tasting Bethmale, the local cheese of the Ariège Pyrenees. For dessert, the croustade is a must, a beloved sweet treat from the southwest. After this feast, you’ll probably have plenty of memories (and a full stomach).
