Starting from Murat-le-Quaire, this Volcans Trail offers lunar landscapes and elevation changes in the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes. Four distances to choose from, including 32 km, 43 km, and 75 km, allow you to loop through sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage and to explore the Chaîne des Puys, the Combrailles plateau, and the Massif du Sancy. Between lakes, waterfalls, and exceptional viewpoints, the race combines performance with the discovery of the most beautiful panoramas of the Puy-de-Dôme.
The volcanoes of Auvergne are impressive when seen from below 🌋. Will you muster the nerve to climb them? On a beautiful hot August day, this rugged trail begins in Murat-le-Quaire, in the Puy-de-Dôme, at the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
For this Volcanoes Trail, four distances are available to satisfy your craving for lunar landscapes 🌕 and to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it’s not for the faint-hearted: three trails of 32km, 43km and 75km. This is clearly a nature trail that meets the most breathtaking panoramas of the Puy-de-Dôme such as the Chaîne des Puys, the Combrailles plateau, the Massif du Sancy and the volcan of Cantal. You’ll cross the Mont-Dore with technical passages between lakes, waterfalls and mountains ⛰️. Up high, you’ll enjoy exceptional panoramas over the peaks, the Puys de Louchadière, de Jume, de Coquille and des Goutes, the Pavin Lake and the town of Saint-Ours. It’s sure to fill your eyes, recharge your batteries, and conquer the elevation gain. 💪
To recharge after this journey worthy of the greatest volcanologists, your menu is all set. You can enjoy a hearty Auvergne stew followed by a small cheese platter with some blue d’Auvergne and a Saint-Nectaire 🧀. You’ve earned a few treats anyway! And if you fancy a light digestion walk, locals will recommend the Vulcania discovery park, a very playful park for the whole family, or, if you love old stones, the Murol Castle.
