About this event

In Utö, in June, the days grow longer and the golden light bathes the archipelago, as ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö gets the Nordic season underway. The course combines granite cliffs in the north with beaches in the south, featuring technical single-tracks and three distances: Experience (5.95 km + 1.1 km of swimming), Sprint (18 km), and World Series (27.59 km of running and 4.5 km of swimming). The event is a qualifier for the world championship in September and is renowned for its mythical setting.

In June, at this latitude, the sun hardly ever wants to set: days stretch to infinity and the Stockholm archipelago bathes in a golden light late into the night ☀️. It’s in this setting that every year the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö, on the small island of Utö, south of the Swedish archipelago 🇸🇪. Here you have more than a race, it’s the official kick-off of the Nordic season. And for those who practice swimrun, it’s one of the most symbol-laden events on the planet 🌍.

You have to go back to the summer of 2002 to understand why Utö is regarded as a sacred place 🧘‍♀️. That year, in the inn’s bar of the Utö Värdshus, Anders Malm and three partners drew up a map of the islands on a napkin and pitched a counter idea: the last team to Sandhamn settles the hotel and the rounds 💶. Two duos accepted the challenge the next morning and completed the circuit in under twenty-four hours. Four years later, Michael Lemmel and Mats Skott turned it into a real test: ÖTILLÖ, “ from island to island” in Swedish 💭. In the beginning, barely eleven teams dared to line up and two crossed the finish line in time ⏱️. Twenty years later, this once-bold bet has become a world championship whose finish line is… right here, at Utö 🏆.

The terrain alone justifies the trip. To the north of the island, jagged granite cliffs plunge straight into a Baltic Sea of inky blue; to the south, the landscape softens and unveils sandy beaches 🌲. Between them wind lines of technical single-tracks carved through pine forests, where you must mind your footing as much as your breathing 🌬️. Three distances let you test yourself: the Experience with its 5.95 km of racing and 1.1km of swimming to discover the sport through a series of short transitions; the Sprint of 18 km in total is tense and full of transitions; and the World Series adds 27.59 km of running and 4.5km of swimming 🏊. This all-in version, with moving terrain and brief swims, is invigorating ⚡️. There are climbs here and there, but each drop ends in a wide-open view that quickly makes you forget the effort 🏞️.

One number captures the spirit of the place better than any other: 13°C. It’s the water temperature in mid-June, and be warned, the Nordic Baltic isn’t often warm 🥶. Every plunge lands like a reminder to stay on course, and that’s exactly what gives this season-open its rough, almost initiation-like character 🫨. Also know that the World Series is qualifying: the points earned on the island count toward the world championship race in September. This event is about about 70 km and is rated by CNN as one of the toughest in the world 🎟️. Running Utö, and stepping into the ice-cold water 🧊 is part of the legend.

And since you’ve made the trip to the cradle of swimrun, take a moment to savor the afterglow 🎉. On Utö itself, the Utö Värdshus (the inn where the sport was born) remains the ideal HQ to reconnect your shoulders around a hearty meal and a well-deserved beer 🍻. The island then lends itself to wandering: bike rentals to explore the coastline paths, a (milder) swim on the south sandy beaches, or a detour to the remnants of the oldest iron mine in Sweden 🤩. And if you want to extend the stay, the capital is just a boat ride away: made up of 14 islands linked by 57 bridges, Stockholm blends medieval streets of Gamla Stan, its museums and clean Nordic design, a fitting end to the trip with dry feet, and without a wetsuit this time 😉.

If the idea of racing where it all began tempts you, the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö welcomes you with open arms 🚀.
