Les Galopades du Patrimoine

At the extreme south of the Normandy, between Caen and Le Mans, the town of the Alençon (in the Orne) is rich in art and history, and that’s why it’s nicknamed the “Queen of Lace”. Bordering the Mancelles Alps (yup, there are Alps in the north of the country 🤣), you’ll discover its dazzling architectural heritage through the Galopades du Patrimoine. Don’t worry, no horseback riding on the agenda but indeed a running race!

But concretely, what can you expect? A half-nighttime event through the “Cité des Ducs” linked to the European Heritage Days, usually held in mid-September. A course where sport and culture intertwine, reminding us of Pierre de Coubertin’s famous saying “a healthy mind in a healthy body” 😇. It’ll be your chance to learn a bit more about this lace capital, rich in culture.

Just a few steps from the Parc Naturel Régional Normandie Maine 🌲 , the sanctuaire city (in homage to Sainte Thérèse of Lisieux) will be the home base of this race to run at full speed 💥! There are two courses to choose from: a 7 km as well as a 13 km, with a distance for children of 1.8 km as a curtain-raiser to start the event. Total immersion guaranteed in the heart of Alençon’s heritage. 🏰

As a privileged participant, you’ll have the honor of passing through historic monuments along the route. Notably the Halle au Blé, a kind of little sister to the Grand Palais de Paris with its large circular glass dome, once used for grain trading 🌾. Throughout the course you’ll notice many spectators along the roadside to boost the atmosphere and there’ll be plenty of entertainment. In short, you’ll find the vibe absolutely on point! 🥳

A few more charming spots will be on your route, but we won’t reveal them just yet: you’ll have to come and discover them 🕵️‍♂️! After crossing the finish line like a Duke of Boulogne of yesteryear, you’ll be invited to sample Alençon’s iconic andouillette, a Norman culinary specialty. Don’t forget to swing by the Beaux-Arts and Lace Museum (Heritage Days oblige), which showcases the technique of the Point d’Alençon lace, unique in its kind and making the city’s reputation.
