How do you calculate running pace?
Running pace is the time needed to cover one kilometre, expressed in minutes and seconds per kilometre (min/km). It is the standard measure runners use to manage effort in training and races — and is often more useful than speed in km/h for adjusting intensity in real time.
This calculator works both ways: if you know your usual pace, it gives you your speed and finishing time; if you prefer to work with speed, which can be useful in cycling or certain training plans, simply switch tabs. Splits at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the distance help you monitor progress during a race and avoid starting too quickly.
Pace benchmarks by level
| Level | 10K pace | 10K time | Marathon time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 7:00 /km | 1h10 | ~5h10 |
| Intermediate | 5:30 /km | 55min | ~4h05 |
| Advanced | 4:30 /km | 45min | ~3h20 |
| Elite amateur | 3:30 /km | 35min | ~2h35 |
These benchmarks are provided as a guide — marathon time is not a simple linear extrapolation from 10K pace, as endurance plays an increasingly important role over longer distances.
Why pace management is essential
Starting too quickly is one of the most common mistakes in running, especially in a marathon: starting 5% too fast can cost several minutes later because of accumulated fatigue. Using this calculator's split times before a race helps you define a realistic pacing plan and follow it through each quarter of the distance.
Knowing your pace precisely also helps structure quality training sessions: marathon pace for long runs, threshold pace for tempo work and maximal-aerobic-speed pace for intervals. To go further, try our maximal aerobic speed calculator for a detailed breakdown of these training paces.
